Putting on our bibs for the race
Excited and READY TO GO! Yeah!!
Still ready
Tish and Jazmin Urioste before the race
The racing crew, David, Jazmin and Val. Jayden was a big encouragement with all his enthusiasm!
Jayden and Jarod Urioste and Adam, the support crew. We could not have done it without them.
Listening to the instructions before the race.
Jazmin in the middle, Val and David are a little farther back at the start
Val finishes RIGHT AT 1:00:00
David came huffing in, pouring on the speed to make the last few seconds count.
See, I actually did cross the finish line.
Evidence... here is what I wrote on my hand the night before!

Evidence... here is what I wrote on my hand the night before!

Many of you know, I started training for a Marathon back in January of this year. It is going to be a 15 month torture of which I am in the third month. As a part of the training I ran the Victorian Classic 10k in Eureka Springs, Arkansas Saturday, March 12, 2011. Ironically, it was run the same day and started at the same second as the marathon I am training for, the Catalina Marathon on Catalina Island between Two Harbors and Avalon, California.

Placing in my division would be nice, but that was not expected. I am not yet running at any kind of racing ability yet.

The night before the race, I wrote on my hand 73.4 minutes as my goal time. That translates to 1:13:24. I ended finishing with 29 seconds to spare at 1:12:55. That was about the most exciting thing of the whole day.

We met friends there and had Subway afterwords with them. This represents a personal record for longer distance* runs AND I managed to score my fastest mile to date in this training.

(*longer distance - ha! This will rank in my shorter distances in a few months, I know, if I am really training for a marathon. However, as of right now, longer distances is anything over 4 miles. That changes to 5 miles in a week or two.)

History

Personally, I have had a sporadic history with jogging. Back in college (25 years ago) I ran 31 miles one day. My best mile recorded was between 5:07 and 5:40, I cannot remember exactly but I am thinking 5:17. Since then I have thought many times that I should have run a marathon then but I never did any organized racing.

Since marrying Jennifer I have thought about getting started again. That was nearly 14 years ago.

Now that we are harvesting, milling and building our own house my endurance has been greatly lacking. Also, Adam is training for endurance for his basket ball game and Val is training for going into the military in a couple years.

All that combined, I began walking back in January to start with. A friend of mine, Ray Schneider, set a challenge of running the Catalina Marathon in 2012 at dinner one night. I though long and hard about it for three days and accepted the challenge. During that time I walked 12 miles in Aruba as a test of my ability.

Well, so here I am, three months in and finally run my first organized event. I survived that and am beginning to look forward to what the year has to offer. I hope to be in the Boomtown Half marathon in Jun and a fitDisney half marathon (or two) in September in preparation for all this.
